Make a Photo Collage with 100 Photos

A hundred-photo collage is a different problem from a ten-photo one. At that count, individual photos are too small to read as photographs — the collage works as a texture, an impression of a year or an event, not as a set of pictures you examine one by one. Accepting that changes how you choose the photos.

Pick for colour and brightness rather than content. A hundred photos that are all mid-tone and similar in colour make a pleasing wall; a hundred photos where twenty are very dark produce visible holes.

It is also worth deciding what the collage is for. As a printed poster a hundred photos works beautifully, because a viewer stands close and examines it. As a social post the same image is seen at thumb size for a second, and forty photos would have communicated more.

Recommended canvas size

1600 × 1600 px or larger

At 1080 px, a 10 × 10 grid gives each photo about 100 px — smaller than a WhatsApp thumbnail. 1600 px gives roughly 150 px per cell, which is the point where faces start being recognisable again.

How to make it

  1. Set a large canvas first 1600 × 1600 or 2000 × 2000. Do this before uploading, so the layout is calculated at the final size.
  2. Upload in batches Phones struggle with a hundred full-resolution photos at once. Upload thirty or forty, then use Add Photos to append more.
  3. Use the 100 Photos or Mosaic style Both are in the Styles tab. 100 Photos leaves a small gap between cells; Mosaic is almost seamless and covers about 97% of the canvas.
  4. Remove the outliers Open the Layers panel and delete any photo that is much darker or much brighter than the rest — at this scale they read as holes.
  5. Export patiently A large export takes several seconds and a lot of memory. On a phone, close other tabs first.

Tips that actually change the result

What usually goes wrong

A 1080 px canvas

A hundred photos on a 1080 px square gives each one about 100 px. That is smaller than a WhatsApp thumbnail. Go to 1600 px or larger.

Uploading all hundred at once

Mobile browsers run out of memory. Batches of thirty or forty, appended with Add Photos, stays responsive.

Keeping very dark or very bright photos

At this scale outliers read as holes punched in the wall. Delete them from the Layers panel.

Choosing photos by content

At 150 px nobody can see what is happening in the photo. Choose for colour and brightness consistency instead.

Questions

How many photos can a collage have?

There is no hard limit, and the layouts are tested up to 300. The practical limit is your device memory — a hundred works comfortably on a modern phone, several hundred is better done on a computer.

Will the faces be visible in a 100-photo collage?

Only if the canvas is large enough. At 1600 × 1600 a 10 × 10 grid gives about 150 px per photo, which is roughly the threshold for recognising a familiar face. At 1080 px they are not.

Why does my browser slow down with many photos?

Every photo is held in memory as image data. Uploading in batches of thirty or forty rather than all at once keeps it responsive, and closing other tabs helps on a phone.
