Remove the Background From a Photo
Background removal here runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server, and there is no AI model to download. That is a deliberate trade-off. The AI cutout libraries that handle any subject need a 40 to 80 MB model download before they do anything, which on mobile data is a real cost for a first-time visitor.
What is here instead works by colour. It handles plain and single-colour backgrounds in one tap, and gives you a magic wand, a soft eraser and a restore brush for everything else. For a portrait against a wall, a product on a table, or a passport-style photo, that is usually enough.
Know when to stop. Colour-based cutout is excellent on plain backgrounds and workable on simple ones, but hair against foliage is a genuinely hard problem that even paid AI tools get wrong. If the wand and the eraser are fighting you after a couple of minutes, a tighter crop usually solves the real problem faster.

Recommended canvas size
Any size — the cutout works at the photo's full resolution
Pixel editing happens on an offscreen copy at native resolution, so the result stays sharp even if the on-screen preview is small.
How to make it
- Select the photo on the canvas Tap it once. The Remove Background panel works on the selected photo.
- Try One-Tap Background Remove first It samples six points around the edges and clears anything close to those colours, then softens the edge. On a plain background this is usually the whole job.
- Use the wand for anything it missed Open Cutout Tools and tap a colour to remove it. Raise Tolerance if too little disappears, lower it if the subject starts vanishing.
- Clean up with the brushes The eraser removes by hand; the restore brush paints pixels back from the original if you go too far.
- Soften the edge, then tap Done Edge Feather takes the hard scissor-cut look off the outline. Done commits the result.
Tips that actually change the result
- Tolerance is the control that matters. Start around 30 and adjust — a blue sky needs a higher value than a white studio wall because sky varies across the frame.
- Turn on "match this colour everywhere" to clear the same colour showing through gaps — between an arm and the body, for example — that the contiguous wand cannot reach.
- Feather of 1 to 2 px is usually right. More than about 4 px starts eating into hair and fine detail.
- A checkerboard appears behind the canvas once anything is transparent, so you can see exactly what has been removed.
What usually goes wrong
It clears the background in one tap and quietly takes the edge of the subject with it. Start around 30 and raise it slowly.
Anything past about 4 px starts dissolving hair and fine detail. One to two is usually the right amount.
Colour matching needs the background to be distinguishable. A crowded scene needs the eraser brush, and that is normal.
Over-erasing feels fatal but is not. The restore brush paints back from an untouched copy, so the original pixels return exactly.
Questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere to remove the background?
No. The cutout runs entirely in your browser using the canvas. The photo never leaves your device for this operation.
Does it work on busy backgrounds?
Not in one tap. Colour-based removal needs the background to be reasonably distinct from the subject. For a crowded or detailed background, the eraser brush is the practical route.
The wand removed part of my subject. What now?
Lower the Tolerance and try again, or switch to the Restore brush and paint the subject back — it restores from an untouched copy, so the original pixels come back exactly.
Can I put the cut-out person on a different background?
Yes. After the cutout, set a canvas background colour or gradient from the Premium Backgrounds panel, or place another photo behind it and reorder in the Layers panel.
